Everyone knows and loves the energetic fun of swimming, boating, and jet-skiing busy Whitewater Lake, especially leading up to the 4th of July, but with the hustle and bustle of the summer holiday behind us, who’s seeking a quiet activity to reset you? Set aside a day (or weekend!) to indulge in one or more of the following quiet must-dos on or near peaceful waters. You’ll feel your calm instantly return to you.
We've highlighted this area for picnics in this past post, but it bears repeating! A picnic on this oak-filled peninsula is nothing short of magic. Throw your blanket down facing Rice Lake and the Kettle Moraine State Forest, kick back, and pop a sparkling water while you nibble a picnic platter from Staller Estate Winery. *Insider tip: Arrive just before dusk and enjoy your goodies under an undoubtedly gorgeous sunset.
From loons to cranes to marlins, Bird City has a chorus to reset your soul. Whether in town on Whitewater Creek (Cravath Lakefront Park) or outside the city on Rice Lake (off of the Rice Lake Nature Trail), you can sit and relax with a book and be serenaded. Early morning is a coveted time to be out with the birds.
A popular fishing hole and kayak drop-in spot, Burnt Village County Park offers a vista on the Bark River that’ll take your breath away. It’s easy to forget there’s a country road right behind you. This spot gets sunny, so bring your sunscreen, hat, and/or umbrella!
For many people, a reset includes a nap, and doing so near trickling water puts anyone to sleep. Bluff Creek (off of County Hwy P) is the perfect spot to set up a hammock and let the sounds of the water and surrounding nature preserve lull you into dreamland. *Insider tip: Enjoy mid-day when fishing isn’t as popular!
Kayaking Rice Lake is otherworldly. Drop in at the boat launch off of State Park Dr. or Dr. O.R. Rice Picnic Area and drift into bliss. With the Kettle Moraine State Forest covering much of the shoreline, this lake offers more natural (and less residential!) views/sounds. Our advice, much like our tip for picnics, kayak at sunset. The colors are mesmerizing.
Here’s to the peace and quiet you crave!
